Fancy Number Plate 0000 – 9999 Apply 2026, Status, Cost & Process

A fancy number plate (also called “VIP number”, “choice number”, “premium number”, etc.) is a special vehicle registration number not randomly assigned, but chosen or bid for by the owner. Instead of getting a sequential or ordinary registration number, a person can opt for a number with repeated digits (like “1111”, “9999”), special patterns (“0786”, “1000”), or very low numbers (“0001”) which are considered prestigious or lucky.

Such plates stand out on the road, and many people pick them for reasons like status, personal preference, numerology, or seizing a unique number that’s easier to remember. In short: a fancy number plate is a legal but “special-choice” registration number rather than a regular sequential one.

Why Do People Want Fancy Numbers? Status, Personalisation & Demand

Fancy numbers are in demand for several reasons:

  • Status & prestige: A rare or memorable number plate signals exclusivity. Many people choose fancy numbers to make their vehicle stand out.
  • Personalisation & luck / numerology: Some folks pick numbers considered lucky or meaningful to them repeating digits or patterns that are easy to remember.
  • Memorable number: Fancy plates are easier to remember, which can be desirable for personal convenience or businesses.
  • Resale or branding value: For companies or high-end vehicle owners, fancy numbers can add to the “brand value” of the vehicle.

Because of limited availability (only a certain set of numbers are categorized as fancy or VIP) and high demand, these numbers often carry a premium over regular registration numbers.

Legal & Official Recognition of Fancy Numbers

Fancy or VIP registration numbers are legal and valid provided they are obtained through the official, government-approved process (typically via the portal of the transport authority).

They are treated the same way as regular registration plates, as long as they follow the standard rules for registration, fees, and High Security Registration Plate (HSRP) norms.

Because of popularity and demand, many states have formalized the “fancy-number booking / auction” process. This ensures transparency and fair allocation rather than random or unfair assignment.

So yes fancy plates are fully legitimate when done properly.

Fees, Pricing & Auction What Fancy Numbers Cost (2025)

The cost of a fancy number plate depends heavily on factors like rarity of the number, demand in that region, and the state’s RTO rules. Below are some common ranges and examples:

  • The number “0001” considered top-tier or “super elite” often starts at a base price of ₹ 5,00,000 in many states.
  • Numbers like “0002” to “0009” also in high-demand but slightly less rare ten start around ₹ 3,00,000.
  • Medium-fancy numbers like repeated digits (e.g. 4444, 6666, 9999), or special nummers like 1000, 0786, etc., may start from around ₹ 2,00,000.
  • Less “premium” but still choice numbers (special sequences, partially fancy) may start as low as ₹ 1,00,000 depending on demand.
  • In some states for less desirable numbers or “reserve / choice” numbers (not strictly fancy), there may be a modest fee (or base-fee) if the number is not in high demand.

Because many numbers are auctioned, final prices often exceed base price depending on competition. Elite or sought-after numbers can reach several lakhs of rupees.

Processing Time & Delivery When Will You Get the Number Plate

Once you complete the application and bidding process:

  • After winning the bid and paying the required amount, the allotment letter is usually generated and sent within 1–2 business days.
  • After submission of allotment letter and required documents at the RTO, the registration process and issuing of High Security Registration Plate (HSRP) typically takes around 5–7 working days (depending on RTO workload).
  • Overall, from application to final plate issuance might take about 1–2 weeks, but this may vary depending on state, demand and number selected.

Transfer or Reuse of Fancy Numbers What Happens When You Sell or Change Vehicle

If you sell your vehicle or want to move the fancy number to a new vehicle, many states allow transfer of fancy number subject to RTO rules and payment of transfer fees.

The new vehicle must be under your name (or your company’s name). In some states, transfers to family members are allowed. The old vehicle must be surrendered / cancelled or proof of sale must be shown.

Because fancy numbers are in demand and limited, transferring them legally ensures the number retains value and legitimacy.

Differences Across States Variation in Rules, Fees, and Availability

Fancy number policies differ from state to state. What’s valid in one region may work differently in another. Some differences:

  • In certain states, fancy numbers are allotted via fixed premium fee + first-come basis, while in others there is e-auction bidding.
  • The base/reserve fees vary significantly depending on RTO and local demand.
  • Number availability and choice may differ some states allow selection from many combinations; others restrict to a small set of “premium / VIP” patterns.

Hence, before applying, always check your state’s RTO / transport-department portal for exact process, fee structure, and eligibility.

Important Considerations, Rules & Legal Compliance

Even with a fancy plate, you must follow all traffic and registration laws. Some important points:

  • Fancy number plates must be issued by an authorised RTO process plates made privately or “stylised” unofficially may be considered invalid.
  • You must use an official High Security Registration Plate (HSRP) old or custom-made plates with unusual fonts or damaged visibility may be penalized.
  • Once allotted, if you resell or transfer the vehicle, you must follow formal transfer procedures and pay applicable transfer fees for the fancy number.
  • VIP / fancy numbers don’t grant any traffic privileges they don’t exempt you from rules, fines, pollution checks, or other legal obligations. They are for identification + customization only.

Current Trends & Recent Examples (2025) Demand Is High

  • Fancy / VIP registrations remain in high demand across many states.
  • Numbers like “0001” continue to fetch high bids reflecting their top-tier status in auction-based allocation.
  • For many buyers, getting a fancy number is more than a plate it’s about personal branding, prestige, memorability.
  • As more people opt for personalized/vanity numbers, some states are strengthening regulations and insisting on proper HSRP use and official issuance.
